Whether You Need One
For reading the site, no. Searching players, browsing skins and finding a server all work signed out and always will.
An account is for putting something in rather than taking something out. Uploading a skin, listing a server, or leaving a review all need one.
What Signing Up Involves
- Step 1. Pick a username, an email address and a password
- Step 2. Confirm your age
- Step 3. Enter the six digit code we email you
- Step 4. Link an Xbox account, which is optional
- Step 5. Done, and you are signed in already
Only the first three are required. You can close the page after the code and come back to the rest whenever you like.
Your Username
This is the name people see on your skins, your listings and your reviews, and it is not your gamertag. Three to twenty characters, using letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens.
It can be changed later, once every 14 days. Changing Your Username covers what happens to the old one.
Your Age
You have to be at least 13. We check it once at signup and do not keep the answer.
The Verification Code
A six digit code goes to the address you gave, and the account is not usable until it is entered. That is what stops somebody signing up as an address they do not own.
If it has not arrived, check the spam folder first, then try sending it again. Codes expire after a few minutes, so an old one in your inbox will be refused even when it looks right.
Linking Xbox Is Optional
You can skip it and everything except reviews still works. Linking proves a gamertag is yours, which is what reviews need and what makes your votes count in full.
It can be done any time afterwards from Settings, so there is no reason to hunt for your Xbox password mid-signup. Linking Your Xbox Account covers it properly.
Does it cost anything?
No, creating an account is completely free. There is no paid tier, nothing is unlocked by paying, and listing a server is free as well.
We hold the email address and never publish it. What We Store About Your Account has the full list of what an account leaves behind.
