What Linking Is For
It proves a gamertag is yours. Anybody can type a name into a vote box, but only the person who can sign in to that Xbox account can link it, and that difference is what a few things here depend on.
Everything else works without it. You can search, browse, upload skins and list a server with no Xbox account attached at all.
What It Unlocks
- Writing a server review, which needs a link outright
- Votes that count in full rather than a quarter
- Removing your own player profile
- Showing on your player page that the gamertag is yours, if you want that
What We Read
Your gamertag and your Xbox ID, and nothing else. The sign-in happens on Microsoft's own pages, so we never see your password and could not store it if we wanted to.
We do not publish which Xbox account you linked. That connection stays private unless you turn it on yourself.
Linking It
- Step 1. Sign in and open Settings
- Step 2. Press Link Xbox account
- Step 3. Sign in with Microsoft on the page that opens
- Step 4. You come back here linked, and Settings shows the gamertag and the date
One Xbox account links to one LecternMC account. If the gamertag is already linked somewhere else, unlink it there first.
Saying That Player Is You
Settings carries a toggle called Say that this player is me. It is off by default, and turning it on connects the gamertag to your account on your player page so it can show your role here and link to what you have published.
It is off by default because people linked an Xbox account under a promise that the link stays private, and turning that inside out without asking would break it.
Writing a server review connects the two anyway, because a review is posted under your gamertag. If that matters to you, it is worth knowing before you write one.
If Microsoft Will Not Let You
The refusal usually comes from Xbox rather than from us, and the message says which of these it was.
- The Microsoft account has no Xbox profile yet, which is made at xbox.com
- The account belongs to a child and has to join a Microsoft family group first
- Xbox Live is not available in that account's country or region
- The account needs adult verification before it can sign in
- That Xbox account is already linked to another LecternMC account
Unlinking
Settings again, then Unlink. It drops the connection, so reviews you have already written stay where they are and your votes go back to counting a quarter.
Unlinking does not bring back a player profile you removed. Removal is permanent and does not depend on the link staying in place.
