Changing Your Gamertag

Where It Actually Happens

Your Bedrock name is your Xbox gamertag, so it changes on your Xbox account. There is no setting for it inside Minecraft, and there is nothing we can do from here.

Microsoft handle it on their own support site, and that page is also where the current cost and the number of free changes are kept up to date:

https://support.xbox.com/help/account-profile/profile/change-xbox-live-gamertag

LecternMC is not Microsoft and has no access to your Xbox account, so nothing here can rename you and nobody here can do it on your behalf. We also do not repeat their pricing or menu paths, because both have changed before and a stale number is worse than a pointer to the source.

What Happens to Your Profile Here

Nothing splits in two. Your profile belongs to the Xbox account rather than to the name on it, so the page stays the same page, the new name becomes the current one, and the name you dropped joins your name history underneath it.

An old gamertag showing in your history is the record working rather than something stale. It is how a profile survives a rename at all.

We Will Not Notice Straight Away

We do not find out that you renamed. Nothing tells us, because we are not connected to Microsoft, so your profile keeps showing the old name until something shows us the new one.

That happens when a server which reports to us sees you playing under it. It is not a cache and there is no refresh button, and Refreshing an Out of Date Name or Skin covers what actually updates it.

What a Rename Can Break Elsewhere

On servers that reward voting, anything keyed on your name stops reaching you. A server that keys rewards properly follows you across the change without noticing, and one that keys on the gamertag quietly stops paying out.

If a server stops crediting your votes right after a rename, that is worth mentioning to its staff, because it is fixable at their end and invisible at yours.

Renaming does not reset your vote cooldown. Voting is counted against the Xbox account rather than the name, so a new gamertag does not buy a second vote.

What It Does Not Touch

  • Your LecternMC username, which is a separate name on a separate account
  • Skins you have uploaded here
  • Servers you have listed
  • Reviews you have written

Gamertags and Minecraft Usernames covers how those two names sit alongside each other, and why changing one leaves the other alone.
